Panama Canal Extension - Third Set of Locks

Within this project, G-tec was actively involved in the site investigation for the expansion of the Panama Canal.
G-tec carried out geophysical surveys (Bathymetry, side scan sonar, high resolution seismic reflection and refraction seismic) prior dredging works for the widening and the deepening of the existing navigational channels.

The project was divided in different phases.

Phase 1: Pacific Entrance of Panama Canal
- Side scan sonar survey allowing morphological mapping of the seabed and the detection of obstructions
- Seismic refraction survey to characterize the layers based on the propagation velocity of seismic compressive waves

Phase 2: Atlantic Entrance of the Panama Canal
- Side scan sonar survey allowing morphological mapping of the seabed and the detection of obstructions
- High resolution seismic reflection survey in order to map the sediments layers

Phase 3: Panama Canal - Gatun Lake
- Single beam echo sounder bathymetry
- Side scan sonar survey allowing morphological mapping of the seabed and the detection of obstructions
- High resolution seismic reflection survey in order to map the sediments layers
