G-tec : Thorntonbank Project
Offshore Renewable Energy Projects in North Sea - Belgium
Year2008 to ongoing
LocationBelgium
DescriptionG-tec is involved in the site investigation of Offshore Renewable Energy Projects in the Belgian North Sea.

A few examples of projects related to Offshore Renewable Energy in North Sea - Belgium :

Project:Norther Offshore Windfarm
Year:  September 2011 to ongoing
Description:
Soil investigation on the site of the fourth authorized offshore wind energy park off the Belgian coast which building work will start in 2014.
Technique:The first part of the survey consisted of side scan sonar and magnetometry measurements over the coring and CPT locations. The second part consists of multibeam and sparker measurements over the extension area of the concession zone. These measurements, together with those performed by G-tec in 2010, will serve as a baseline study for the future windfarm.

Project:Eldepasco Offshore Windfarm
Year:April 2010 to ongoing
Description:
Geophysical campaign along the export cable and infield cables of the Eldepasco Offshore Wind Farm
Techniques:Multibeam, magnetometry, sub-bottom profiling and side scan sonar survey.

Project:Thorntonbank Offshore Windfarm
Year:January 2008 to May 2010
Description:
Geophysical investigation prior to the installation of 60 wind turbines.
Technique

Within this project, G-tec was actively involved in the site investigation for the Thornton Bank farshore wind farm, North Sea, Belgium.
G-tec ran and supervised complete site investigation on the Thorntonbank, first offshore windmill farm in Belgium located 40 km from the coastline.

The project was divided in different phases. The activities consisted of:

Phase 1: Geophysical Site Investigation – Sub-Area B of the Thornton Bank Wind Farm:
- High resolution multibeam echosounder bathymetry
- Side scan sonar survey allowing morphological mapping of the seabed and the detection of obstructions
- High resolution and Sparker seismic survey in order to map the sediments layers
- Magnetometry/Gradiometry for detection of UXO's, wrecks...

Phase 2: Geophysical Survey along the Cable Route between the Shore and the Wind Farm
- Magnetometry/Gradiometry survey to localize metallic objects, allowing their removal prior the installation of the cable.

Phase 3: Geotechnical Survey Investigation
- Supervision of the different geotechnical campaigns.
